Floating Around Aimlessly

April 28, 2011

My Kindred Spirit

Those of you who know me well are probably familiar with my sense of direction (or lack thereof). I struggle even in the US of A, where I have a GPS, the highways are clearly marked, and street signs abound. Alas, I am still always lost.

Now picture me here in Nicaragua, where people don’t have addresses. At all. I’m not kidding – if you want to find me in Matagalpa you’d have to go Parque Dario, walk two blocks North up the hill, turn left at Hotel Bermudez, and knock on the fourth door on your right (across from the wall painted Sandinista colors).

I recently found a little gem of a restaurant called “La Vita e Bella”, where I occasionally go to get a bit of Italian food. I don’t mean to knock typical Nicaraguan fare, but it is good to have a little break from fried rice and beans, fried plantains, fried yucca, fried meat, fried cheese… (there is a theme here).

Now, I would love to tell all of you potential visitors to Nicaragua just where to find La Vita e Bella, but unfortunately this will be difficult given the lack of addresses in general and lack of street names in particular.

All I can say is that it is near this little store:

Down this alley:

And through this door:

Think of it as kind of a scavenger hunt… buen provecho!
