Back in the US of A and Back to Business(school advice)
I’m back! It was sad to leave my Nicaraguan family and friends, but I am definitely happy to be firmly back in the land of plenty. I am also happy to report that I made it back with the following:
• My life
• A machete to call my own
• Four pounds of coffee
• Cuban cigars
• Several bottles of rum
• Bricks upon bricks of Nicaraguan chocolate
I am slowly but surely transitioning back to my USA self, despite the fact that 1) I am constantly translating everything into Spanish in my head 2) air conditioning now seems to be unbearably cold to me and 3) my instinct is to wash all dishes by hand even though there is a sparkly dishwasher less than a foot away. It has not, on the other hand, been difficult at all to re-acclimate to having hot showers.
“So”, you may ask, “What are you going to write about now that you are back in the bosom of your family and leading a fairly normal existence free of rainforests, tiny rural villages, and Socialist dictators?”
Well, my friends, never fear. I will now, as promised, turn my energies to writing about the oh-so-overwhelming process of applying to top business schools. It is a topic about which I could wax poetic for hours upon hours, and this is exactly what I plan to do. Lots of people offered their wisdom and guidance to me as I started down the business school road about this time last year: they shared their own personal application materials, counseled me on what schools to apply to, reviewed my essays, held mock interviews for me, talked me down from high ledges, etc.
Now, I realize that there is no shortage of books, blogs, websites, and admissions consultants who are all eager to tell you exactly how to get into your dream school. I’m not here to do that… I’m here to tell you my own personal admissions story and point out what worked, what didn’t, what I wish I’d done, and what I wish I’d known…
So keep checking back potential bschoolers! I’m about to document my journey to Harvard Business School - the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I’m going to miss your posts from Nicaragua – they brought back so many memories for me. But now you are going to Harvard Business School – the contrast with life in that beautiful doomed country must be fantastic. Keep up the great work.
Yay!! Stumbled on your blog from searching about flying with a machete as I am going to volunteer in Bolivia, and spent the past 3 hours reading all your blogs, in dire search of if you were able to bring one back with you or not!
Congrats!
Hi! Glad you found my humble little blog
. As you probably saw, I was able to make it back with my machete (checked in my suitcase)…good luck in Bolivia!
